Mountain biking has gained popularity in recent years as it offers an opportunity to get fit, get into nature, and see the world from a new perspective. Besides, it?s one of those few sports or activities that can be enjoyed by everyone ? mother, father, brother, sister ? provided you have the right gear.
You may have seen mountain biking races on TV, but this is not the true essence of the sport. Beginners in mountain biking don?t have to head out on rough terrain ? they can start on flat surfaces until they get used to how the bike works. This may be the most feasible option anyway if you have young children with you.
A mountain bike differs from a road bike ? it is specifically built to handle tough off-road trails and the numerous obstacles that may come with it. A heavier mountain bike may be more affordable, but beware of bad handling ? keep this in mind when the time comes for you to get a bike. If you want to save some money, do so, but not with the helmet ? a good helmet can save anyone from serious head injury. And if you have children you are teaching how to ride a bike, never let them ride one unless they are wearing their own helmets.
The world is still rich in beautiful parks and nature reserves where mountain bikers can pass through on their trails. When biking with your family, start on the flat surfaces, before you start moving on to small hills ? only when you?ve gotten to know your bikes and how they work. Children can be quite adventurous though ? so watch them on the downhills!
The most important thing perhaps about a mountain biking family vacation would be the chance to see the world in a brand new light. This is even better than your usual hiking vacation, because your children won?t get bored so easily, and still be able to see the beautiful forests and wildlife scenery. Cycling in a forest is an amazing experience, and the opportunity to see wildlife up close is one your children won?t forget. And take note we?re not talking about angry predators like mountain lions, but rather the kin of Bambi and Bugs Bunny.
Many tour companies offer bike tours, and these would include mountain bike vacations for beginners, complete with food and lodging. One thing to note is that mountain bike trails are marked according to difficulty, so take this into consideration and also ask yourself how experienced you and your family think you are when it comes to mountain biking. You may eventually want to move on to the longer, harder trails once you have practiced more often and more intensely, but remember that your children may get tired easily, even if it doesn?t always look that way.
Mountain biking is a wonderful sport that the whole family can enjoy together. With that said, we leave you with four words of wisdom. No Helmet, No Ride.

March 3rd: Scavenger Hunt
Mouse?s birthday a few years back with a trivia contest, and I was the only person that day that got all 10 questions right about Mickey Mouse. Since then, my family has had a friendly rivalry against me and each other when it comes to Disney trivia. When the first question appeared (What was the name of money used in Disney parks but has been out of production since 2009? The answer was Disney Dollars) I thought I had this contest in the BAG! But then the questions got more difficult. (Which character makes a cameo appearance in Aladdin? The answer was the Beast!) My brother and I eventually tied with 3 out of 5 correct. Then came the dance party. Kim, a cast member that deserves a raise after her debut as the dance instructor, led us through games like freeze dance (when the music stops, you freeze and pose like a Disney character) and a game where you dance in slow motion when the music slows down and pick up the pace when the music speeds up. The funniest part of the day was when we had to pose like Goofy and both my brother and I struck the same pose ?? when Goofy has gum on his shoe in the Orlando International Airport! Overall, I had a fun Saturday with this event and left with both a certificate of participation (signed by my favorite cast member, Steve Y.) and a 3 inch 25 year button.
