The world may have already lost count on the number of times the U.S. has urged China to keep from resorting to aggressive means regarding its territorial claims. On Thursday, Pres. Barack Obama has once again called on China to ?manage its maritime disputes with its neighbors peacefully, without the use of intimidation or coercion.? The relationship between China and Japan has also gone sour, and is feared to escalate tensions because of growing territorial disputes.
Both nations are claiming a group of islands in the East China Sea which are called different names, depending on the speaker or whom you believe is the rightful owner. Besides the islands of Senkaku, or Diaoyu if you?re on the side of China, another territory has raised the concerns of Japan. China was found to be drilling near the maritime borders of the two nations. Japan claims that it?s part of their exclusive economic zone (EEZ), but China asserts that it has been a part of their continental shelf. More than territorial claim issues, China has also made its presence more apparent by sending vessels near, and often into, Japanese territorial waters on a regular basis.
Whenever confronted, China retorts by keeping its stand regarding the territories. At the end of the talks in Washington, Yang Jiechi, China?s State Councilor, stated that China ?will continue to firmly implement its policy? and also supports ?freedom of navigation in all oceans.? Besides Japan, China is also having territorial issues with its neighbours in the South China Sea, like the Philippines and Vietnam.
