Job Summary/Basic Function

  • Develop and promote lecture programs, web sites and other venues to foster an increased level of graduate library research proficiency and awareness of scholarly communication issues.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with other campus departments serving faculty and graduate students.
  • Manage and promote the Digital Commons, the university's digital institutional repository.
  • Encourage and advise faculty on adoption of appropriate open access strategies and copyright issues.
  • Develop and conduct faculty workshops in copyright compliance.
  • Participates in the provision of effective research services, specialized research support, and instruction to graduate students, faculty, and to distributed library patrons through classroom, telephone, e-mail, and other online technologies.
  • Participates in the production and revision of online research instruction tools and training tutorials for graduate students and faculty. Apply knowledge of emerging information technologies, including alternative reference tools and social networking software. Coordinates with other librarians.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the library's internal and external constituencies to provide timely and effective customer service.
  • Ensure that appropriate content and effective approaches to instruction offered to the University's communities.
  • Serve as a liaison to specific graduate programs within his/her areas of expertise.
  • Collect and tabulate service provision statistics in scholarly communications and Graduate and Faculty Commons programming activities.
  • Promote a positive image of the ILRC.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled departmental and faculty meetings including Faculty Senate committee meetings as appointed.
  • Employ a team approach with the other librarians to facilitate the development and review of the policies and procedures of the ILRC's Graduate and Faculty Commons.
  • Participate in both formal and informal professional development opportunities such as conference attendance, professional research and writing, and/or completion of continuing education courses as approved by the University.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MLS/JD, MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent.
  • Five years professional experience in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills.
  • Strong commitment to identifying and managing details of copyright and scholarly communications initiatives.
  • Evident instruction and online reference service interface skills.
  • Evident ability to lead in the adoption of emerging practices and utilization of technologies relevant to reference and instruction in the Digital Age.
  • Skill/experience in the use of digital resource production and classroom management software such as Camtasia and Blackboard.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and effectively respond to the needs of the campus community
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a desire to provide timely and effective customer service.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work without direct supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to efficiently set and prioritize goals and tasks.
  • Commitment to Christian higher education and endorsement of Liberty University's doctrinal statement.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Congenial and friendly personality with a willingness to assist others.

OAKVILLE, Ontario July 25 (Reuters) - American Brendan Steele took full advantage of ideal early scoring conditions to forge a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Canadian Open on Thursday.

Playing the back nine first on a calm, sunny morning at Glen Abbey Golf Club, Steele mixed eight birdies with a single bogey for a seven-under 65 that left him a shot clear of compatriots Matt Kuchar and Scott Brown and Australian Scott Gardiner.

As breezes stiffened and conditions toughened for the afternoon starters no one managed to come close to nudging Steele, 30, from the top of the leaderboard.

Steele, whose has just one PGA Tour win, had three birdies on his outward nine on the Jack Nicklaus-designed layout and picked up the pace after the turn with five birdies over seven holes before dropping his only shot of the day at the ninth.

Kuchar, the highest ranked player in the field at world number six, mixed an eagle with five birdies and a bogey while Brown turned in a flawless round with six birdies.

"It was perfect conditions," smiled Kuchar, who has made 20 consecutive cuts, including all 16 starts this season. "I feel like last week, conditions were so challenging and so difficult at the British Open to come here and play golf that is more friendly and more what we are use to was great."

Gardiner, who has made the cut just twice in his last 16 events, began his day with a par then reeled off six consecutive birdies to race up the leaderboard.

The Australian's red-hot start cooled with seven consecutive pars before he picked up another birdie at 15 followed by his only bogey of the day at 16.

American Hunter Mahan and Swede David Lingmerth were a further shot back after returning 67s while Chez Reavie, whose only career PGA Tour win game at Glen Abbey in 2008, and former Masters champions Bubba Watson and Trevor Immelman were among a large pack three off the pace.

"The first two days the afternoon wave is going to be tougher for sure," said Mahan. "In the morning the greens are pure and the wind is not blowing quite as hard."

Indeed, some of the tournament's biggest names were left floundering in the breezy conditions with former world number one Luke Donald of Britain (73), twice Canadian Open champion Jim Furyk (72) and 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell (76) all failing to break par.

American Woody Austin, who fired four sub-par rounds of 70 last week at the Sanderson Farms Championships to claim his first PGA Tour title in six years, crashed to the bottom of the leaderboard with a 10-over 82.

Reigning champion Scott Piercy began his title defense with 10 straight pars before signing for a one-under 71.

Without a homegrown winner in 59 years, local fans were out in full force to offer their support but could not inspire the Canadian contingent to anything better than a three-under 69 from Brad Fritsch that left him four back of the leader. (Editing by Frank Pingue)

Pope Francis enthralls his young fans: 'I hope he hugs me!'

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil ? Thousands of people flooded Rio?s lush Copacabana beach on Friday for one of the most solemn ceremonies of the Catholic faith, a procession depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

But, in keeping with the unlikely setting, the Way of the Cross procession came with a theatrical, florid twist.

With Pope Francis presiding, the event boasted massive stage sets, intricate lighting, a full orchestra and a cast of hundreds of performers straight out of a Broadway production. Francis watched in silence as the enthusiastic participants re-enacted the Biblical story.

The Way of the Cross is one of the centerpiece events of World Youth Day ? and Francis was one of the main attractions.

An estimated one million young pilgrims from 180 countries had packed the iconic beach for Francis? welcoming rally and mass on Thursday, turning World Youth Day into a carnival of faith.

They braved the rain and cold, coming from all corners of the earth, to meet the man they say strengthened their faith and gave them hope for a better future.

The army of young people packed Rio?s Avenida Atlantica, Copacabana?s ocean drive, waving flags from all over the world and shouting chants of ?Viva o Papa.?

They are the new ?missionaries? for the 76-year-old Argentine pontiff who wants them to ?Go and make disciples of all nations,? the theme of this year?s World Youth Day. A call many of them have taken seriously.

?I am here with a group from New York,? Eva Garrea, a New Yorker of Peruvian descent said on the beach Thursday. ?We are all from different cultures and backgrounds, and yet we are united in our faith. This is a message we can bring to everybody.?

Organizers say more than 400,000 pilgrims and volunteers registered to attend the World Youth Day events, but the estimates of actual crowd numbers at his big events are much higher. In addition, there are also 15,000 priests ? and 6,000 journalists to cover all the excitement.

Hundreds of young Catholics from all over the United States watched the pope?s ceremony from the wet sand, waving American flags and joining in chants of ?Bienvenido,? Portuguese for ?Welcome.?

Mark Jones, a 20-year-old from Florida, reveled in the atmosphere of solidarity among the catholic youth in Rio. ?I think this pope is absolutely what we need right now, it?s a beautiful example of the simplicity and truth that?s present in the Catholic faith,? he said. ?I could not have hoped for a better pope.? ?

Pope Francis continues to draw huge masses of Brazilians to his events on his first foreign trip as Pope. On Sunday, the Pope will give his final mass of the trip and millions of people are expected to attend. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.

Aside from being a celebration of faith, World Youth Day is a jamboree for young people, a weeklong festival of prayers and colorful events. No wonder it has often been called the ?Catholic Woodstock.?

Carlos Zone, from Naples, Fla., traveled to Rio with family and friends. ?It doesn?t get better than this, being here together. And on top of it: The pope is here!? he laughed. ?I hope he hugs me! Or a member of my family. I?d love that!?

Zone?s wish is not so far-fetched. Since his election in March, Pope Francis brought back a hands-on and personable approach to the faithful that has not been seen since the heyday of Pope John Paul II, to the point that he?s earned the nickname of the ?People?s Pope.?

?We are all fans of the pope, we love Pope Francis!? Robert Duarte, a 26-year-old man from Los Angeles, said. ?He is a pope for all people, both rich and poor, everyone.?

The wave of people from all over the world that flooded the beach of Copacabana, joining hands, sharing chants and dancing on the sand long after the pope left the party, proved Duarte right.

The pontiff is making his first visit overseas since he was elected in March. An estimated 2 million people are expected to greet him.

Groups of Catholics carried their national flags like diplomats on a foreign mission. Young pilgrims descended to Rio all the way from Italy, Norway, St. Lucia and even China.

?I took a 28 hours flight to get here, but it?s worth it,? said Fu Jawen, a 29-year-old from Shanghai. ??

Miriam Manzaes, a young woman from Barcelona, said seeing the pope ?was amazing.? Adding, ?I can't explain it with words?I was almost crying.?

And an estimated 30,000 young people from Francis? native Argentina joined the crowd, too.? The pope even added a last-minute visit with them to his already busy schedule at Rio?s cathedral on Thursday.

Fiorenzia de Mattei, a 23-year-old from Buenos Aires, feels a connection to his fellow Argentine. ?We are friendly, cheerful, happy, we show that, and the pope is one of us, like us. That?s the greatest thing about Francis: He is one of the people.?

On a stall nearby, merchandising and souvenirs were selling out fast. Among them, a T-shirt said: ?Keep Calm and Make Disciples.? What was meant to be an ironic slogan could well become the real theme of this year?s World Youth Day.
