Evidence points to police manipulation in SAfrica

(AP) ? South African police may have altered evidence and planted weapons after they shot dead 34 striking miners near Lonmin's Marikana mines in August, according to photographic evidence presented at a commission of inquiry into the killings.

Photographs taken by police the night after the shootings show more weapons by the dead bodies than there were in photographs taken immediately after the violence on Aug. 16. Thousands of miners had gathered at hills in Marikana about 94 kilometers (58 miles) northwest of Johannesburg where 34 miners were shot dead by police and 78 wounded in the worst state violence since the end of apartheid in 1994.

South Africa is conducting a commission of inquiry to look into the parties responsible for 46 deaths, including two policemen and two security guards, during nearly six weeks of strikes at the Lonmin Marikana mines.

Video evidence shown Monday also indicated that some of the slain miners may have been handcuffed.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega said that the commission has launched an investigation into the discrepancies. She said she was presented with evidence that may have suggested one of the crime scenes had been tampered with nearly two weeks ago.

Human rights lawyer George Bizos said the evidence presented at the inquiry clearly indicates an attempt was made to alter the scene.

"The evidence clearly showed there is at least a strong prima facie case that there has been an attempt to defeat the ends of justice," he said. Bizos, who is representing the Legal Resources Centre and Bench Marks Foundation during the inquiry, called on senior police officers in charge of the scene to present evidence.

Crime scene expert Capt. Apollo Mohlaki, who took the night photographs, was questioned during the inquiry Monday. He admitted his photographs showed more weapons around the bodies than those taken earlier, according to the South Africa Press Association. In one set of photos, a man's mangled dead body lies alone in the daylight, and in a picture taken by electric light after dark, there is a panga (machete) under the man's hand.

Mohlaki said he saw the weapon under the man's arm in the photograph he took, but when looking at the day photograph of the same body he said of the weapon: "It is not appearing, I don't see it."

Dali Mpofu, the attorney for the Lonmin miners, entered a video as evidence that showed miners that seemed to be handcuffed. When asked if he saw if any of the dead miners' hands had been bound, Mohlaki said he had not.

"If I am looking at the video there is a person, handcuffed possibly, but on the day I did not observe that," Mohlaki said.

The representative for the police, Ishmael Semenya, had suggested the week before that the integrity of the crime scene could have been compromised by the presence of paramedics, according to SAPA.

"We will hear evidence that paramedics asked that weapons be removed so they could do their work," said Semenya.

On Tuesday, the commission saw photographs of the security guards' bodies, who were among those killed before the Aug. 16 shootings. The photographs showed one of the guards with his tongue cut out while the legs of the other security official were visible in the charred remains of a security vehicle torched by the protesters, according to SAPA. Another photograph showed a group of marchers fleeing with a shotgun stolen from the security guards, it said.

The inquiry began last month and is expected to continue for four months, investigating the roles played by police, miners, unions and Lonmin in the August deaths. Strikes at Lonmin spread to other mining sectors last month, and a deal reached with Lonmin miners that saw workers getting a pay increase of up to 22 percent has workers at other mines demanding similar deals.

Gold Fields said Tuesday that thousands of employees returned to work at the company's South Africa KDC East mine ending a 23-day strike. All three of its mines in South Africa are now back in production, it said. Gold Fields, which is one of the world's top producers of gold, had dismissed 8,100 employees in October for participating in illegal strikes, however it says a deal reached with the National Union of Mineworkers saw a vast majority of those workers reinstated.

The NUM said Tuesday that the 12,000 miners fired from platinum mining company Anglo American Platinum in Rustenburg for staging illegal strikes since September had still not returned to work, and negotiations were underway.

LIVE UPDATES: Election Day 2012

More than a year of stump speeches, fundraisers, presidential serenades and policy debates culminate today. All the persuading, nominating, campaign rallies, door knocking and baby kissing end with Americans heading to polls to choose their president, who will represent them on Capitol Hill, and countless other local races.

Refresh here for updates throughout the day and results all night.

Tune in to ABCNews.com for livestreaming coverage of Election 2012. Our Election Day show kicks off at noon, and the Election Night event begins at 7 p.m.

But before it all wraps up, reflect on some of the most memorable moments of the 2012 election here.

10:45 p.m. ET - Poll Watching With the Lawyers (And Preparing for the Legal Battle)

ABC's Ariane de Vogue and Colleen Curry report:

When polls open Tuesday morning, a small army of thousands of lawyers affiliated with both campaigns and state party efforts will be in place in key swing states where legal action can make a difference in the outcome of the election.

In large part the Democrats are worried about what they say are efforts to suppress the vote. Republicans fear instances of voter fraud.

Both sides will be concentrating on issues such as voter registration and eligibility, poll watcher activity, ballot counting, polling hours and machine malfunctioning.

At the national level teams of lawyers will be wired in to nationwide databases, as Republican attorneys use a Smartphone app to communicate about problems and Democrats relay information to a database in Chicago, according to the Associated Press.

Obama officials, speaking on background, say they have recruited thousands of attorney volunteers to help recruit, train, educate and observe at polling locations across the country. They say they are not only concerned with putting legal teams in place, but also having a data base in place of experts on voting systems, registration data bases, ballot design, student voting and provisional ballots.

More here from Ariane and Colleen.

10:32 p.m. ET - Let 2016 Begin - Biden Votes and Subtly Teases Run; But What About Hillary?

ABC's Arlette Saenz watched Joe Biden cast his vote for president early this morning in Delaware. While this is undoubtedly President Obama's last run for office, Biden could conceivably make another go at the top job in 2016.

When reporters asked Biden, who was chummy with other voters, if this was his last time voting for himself, his answer was interesting.

"No, I don't think so," Biden said outside Alexis I. duPont High School in Wilmington, Del. where he voted with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, son Beau, daughter-in-law Hallie and granddaughter Natalie.

Should he decide to run in 2016, Biden, who ran for president in 1988 and 2008, would be 73 years old with nearly 44 years of politicking under his belt, and he could find himself in a 2016 matchup with another politician currently serving in President Obama's administration - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. More from Arlette here.

Hillary Clinton, who is also set to vote today, has repeatedly said she won't run for president in 2016. More on the chatter around her from ABC's Dana Hughes, who covers the State Department.

10:08 p.m. ET - GMA Rewind - ABC's Entire Powerhouse Political Team

David Muir reported on the Romney campaign and their plans for victory:

Jake Tapper reported on the Obama campaign, which he described as a like a reunion episode on a TV show.

Matthew Dowd handicapped the map and said a slight national vote lead for Romney may have been erased.

Donna Brazile and Nicole Wallace talked about the race according to women for Democrats and Republicans.

8:00 a.m. ET - Time to Vote

The day has come, and for those who didn't vote early or absentee, it's time to head into the voting booth. Wondering what time the polls open and close in your state? ABC News brings you information on the hours voters will cast their ballots in each state.

Find your state here.

1:08 a.m. ET - Closing arguments in Iowa, New Hampshire and on 'Monday Night Football'

ABC News was out with all of the candidates on the final night of campaigning.

Obama Returns to Iowa -

President Obama shed a tear while addressing supporters in Des Moines, Iowa.

ABC's Mary Bruce wrote: President Obama ended his presidential campaign Monday night with an emotional appeal to voters in the state that started it all, asking Iowans to help him finish what he started four years ago.

"We have made real progress over these last four years," the president told an estimated crowd of 20,000 standing outside in the bitter cold. "But Iowa we are here tonight because we have more work to do. We are not done yet on this journey. We have more road to travel."

Just steps away from the campaign office set up for his improbable victory in the 2008 Iowa Caucuses, a nostalgic Obama told Iowans they taught him "to bet on hope."

Read Mary's report here.

Romney - Return to New Hampshire

ABC's Emily Friedman reports from New Hampshire:

Romney's campaign was launched in Stratham, New Hampshire, in June 2011, and Romney has returned more than 23 times this year alone. He essentially camped out in the state in the days and weeks prior to the January primary. Romney, who also owns a home in New Hampshire, spent weeks in the state over the summer too.

"Together we must lead America to a better place," Romney said, his voice growing hoarse at times, the rally his fifth of the day.

Emily's full report is here.

The Monday Night Football Lobby -

Devin Dwyer reports that both candidates were a not quite as emotional when they appeared in separate taped segments on 'Monday Night Football.'

While the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles paused for halftime, and the candidates themselves were still on the road holding final swing state rallies, both men appeared in pre-taped interviews with host Chris Berman during the network's half-time show.

Comparing politics to sports, Berman asked Obama how he planned to "repeat" - one of the most difficult feats for a "championship" team.

"It has to do with not getting distracted, by your own hype, or the critics," Obama said. "It's interesting, political reporters are a lot like sports reporters. And, you lose a game, and you're a bum. You win a game, you're a God.

Berman asked Romney about the most valuable lesson he could apply in the Oval Office he learned from shepherding the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. He cited a greater appreciation for the human spirit.

"I think most people watch the Olympics not just because of the interest in the sport itself. I mean how many people were avid fans of women's bobsled for instance before the Olympics? But they watch the bobsled event because they get to see the character of human beings if you will? the crucible of sport," he said.

Devin's full report is here.

12:48 a.m. ET - It's a Tie!? In Dixville Notch

The first votes are in!

Ten of them, anyway. And it's an Obama, Romney tie.

The small hamlet of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire distinguishes itself every primary and general election by voting right at midnight.

This year ten voters showed up and they split evenly - five votes apiece - for President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Obama won the Dixville Notch vote in 2008. But in elections before that, the town had stuck to more conservative candidates, twice selecting a Republican instead of Bill Clinton.

Dixville Notch and its 10 voters may be symbolic, but they're not a bellwether for the state. Obama won in Dixville Notch in 2008, but that was the first time a majority of the town went for a Dem in 40 years.

The other New Hampshire town with midnight voting- the slightly more populous (32 voters) Hart's Location- swung towards Obama tonight- 23 Obama, 9 Romney.

More here from Elizabeth Hartfield along with some video from Dixvilled Notch:

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Brigham and Women's Hospital study is the first to examine the long-term affect of multivitamins on cardiovascular disease

Boston, Mass. Approximately one-third of Americans take a daily multivitamin, but little is known about a multivitamin's long-term affect on chronic diseases. Now, new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) finds that daily multivitamin use does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in men. A similar BWH study, announced last month, found daily multivitamin use can reduce a man's risk of cancer by 8 percent. The cardiovascular disease findings will be presented Nov. 5 at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2012 and published simultaneously in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"The findings from our large clinical trial do not support the use of a common daily multivitamin supplement for the sole purpose of preventing cardiovascular disease in men," said Howard D. Sesso, ScD, lead author and an associate epidemiologist in the Division of Preventive Medicine at BWH. "The decision to take a daily multivitamin should be made in consultation with one's doctor and consideration given to an individual's nutritional status and other potential effects of multivitamins, including the previously reported modest reduction in cancer risk."

Researchers enrolled nearly 15,000 men over the age of 50 in the study and followed them for more than 10 years. The men were randomly assigned to take either a multivitamin or a placebo every day which ensured that both treatment groups were identical with respect to risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The men self-reported episodes of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular disease, and a panel of physicians reviewed and confirmed their events with medical records. Researchers then compared the group that took the multivitamin with the group that took the placebo and found no significant impact on risk of heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular mortality. Additionally, the effect of a daily multivitamin on major cardiovascular events did not differ on participants with a baseline history of cardiovascular disease and those who were initially free of cardiovascular disease.

J. Michael Gaziano, MD, chief of the Division of Aging at BWH, investigator at VA Boston and senior author of the study, said, "Since so many Americans take daily multivitamins, studies like this are key to providing us with valuable information about what specific benefits multivitamins do or do not provide in terms of their long-term impact on chronic diseases. For cardiovascular disease, we must continue to emphasize a heart-healthy diet, physical activity, smoking cessation and regular screening for cardiovascular risk factors."

Wellness Project Month 6: Spirituality | Simply Enough

Spirituality - burning candles.

New here? Learn about my?wellness project, a year-long wellness experiment.

In preparation for this blog post, I have been pondering what spirituality means to me.

What is it that makes my spirit well?

What activities make me feel more connected to my purpose (why I exist), my vocation, and generally lift my spirits?

Here are a few thoughts on this and my resolutions for Spirituality Month:

Making Music

The top activity that consistently lifts my spirit is making music. It might be playing the piano, singing alone or with others, playing the guitar, or even the violin.

I can think of a few reasons for this:

  • I am experiencing flow.
  • I feel connected to God/Creator.
  • I?m away from the computer.
  • It?s fun!

Resolution #1: Make Music Every Day

During Spirituality Month, I will aim to make music every day. (This should make my guitar teacher happy!)

Self-Improvement

I suppose this entire project is self-improvement in one way or another. However, in this context, I am thinking specifically about self-improvement in the sense that it makes me a better person, and helps me better connect with God and people around me.

I am a big fan of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I?ve read the book several times and picked it up again today. I thought it might be interesting to focus on one of the agreements each week this month. They are:

  • Be impeccable with your word.
  • Don?t take anything personally.
  • Don?t make assumptions.
  • Always do your best.

Resolution #2: Practice The Four Agreements

Each week of Spirituality Month, I will make an effort to practice one of the four agreements.

Cultivating My Vocation

The ?spirituality dimension? in traditional wellness literature is focused on how one ?seeks meaning and purpose in human?existence.?

It?s answering the question: Why am I here? What is my purpose?

I feel a sense of purpose when I am able to inspire others? To live simply. To be organized. To manage time well. To be healthy. To be in the moment. To do what they love!

One of my best platforms for inspiring others is this blog. I love getting feedback that a post I wrote actually moved somebody to make a positive change. Or maybe they just enjoyed reading my musings on a given topic.

I think everybody needs to feel like they?re making a positive impact in the world to have a true sense of purpose.

Resolution #3: Write Inspiring Content on Blog

This month, I will focus on writing inspiring content on this blog ? at least twice per week.

Over to You!

How do you nurture your spiritual wellness?

If you liked what you read, please share it with your friends.
